On the road

I know a lot of people who would say that giving public programs would be the last thing in life that they would want to do. For me I actually really like getting up in front of a room and talking about things. When I was young one of the 4-H projects that my mom always made me do was public speaking. Sometimes it was in the form of working presentations and other times it was just informational lectures. Still it made me get over any of those fears at a pretty young age.
This week I landed an invitation to come to speak at the Glenview Noon Rotary Club. They meet at one of my favorite restaurants, Hackney's. The topic was an update on Wagner Farm. Since they had over 25 people in the club and many of them were new to the area I gave a little background on how the farm came to be. There were a handful of members who were in the club 8 years ago when I first came to Glenview. I was nervous that first time so I decided to take the speakers secret weapon, a prop. So for that speech I took one of our new baby chickens. While the meeting was going on the chick quietly sat in the box and no one was the wiser. Then when my big moment came I pulled him from the box and all kinds of commotion ensued. I told this group this time I was smarter. I have recently passed the Illinois Food Service Sanitation licence and now know that I broke about every health code in the city with that little stunt.
I had a great meal and a lot of fun with the folks from the Rotary. Thanks for the invite.
