Yesterday I had a class visit Wagner Farm from one of our local high schools. While most of our field trips involve elementary classes it was a great change to get to talk with older students. This group is taking a class called Integrated Global Studies. Throughout the year they research and learn about how the world is truly linked together. During their tour of the farm we spent quite a bit of time talking about how we as Americans have gotten to this place in agriculture. It was really shocking to them that only 1.5% of our population are farmers and how many people, not only in America but the world that our farmers feed. We also spend a great deal of time debating the positives, and negatives that mechanization has brought to farming in terms of economic, social and even political terms. In the end I did laugh to myself because it is always the cows that are the real hit at Wagner Farm.
