Dairy project

Being a dairy farm one of the things that WF is getting known for is having some pretty good stock at the county fair. The secret is most of the cows and heifers are on loan from our friends at Golden Oaks Farm in Waukanda, Il. Golden Oaks is a large dairy that spends a lot of time working to breed some of the best Holsteins around. Through their generosity our 4-H kids are allowed to take ownership of the animals for the summer. This year we had 16 kids working in the dairy project. The word work is definitely fitting for what the kids had to do this summer. Besides all the feeding and barn cleaning there is walking the cattle, regular baths and clipping. By the time of the fair hundreds of hours had been logged. Still, all the work pays off when it comes to show day. This year Mata and her cow Lilly took top honors. We also had showmanship wins by Jenny, Abi and Stephanie.
